About us
Summit County Outfitters
Enjoy your ride into the majestic Eagles Nest Wilderness on one of our seasoned horses. Along the way you'll find yourself hypnotized by the visions of elk grazing in the secluded mountain river valleys. You'll notice the lush gently sloping aspen stands leading up to the dark timber benches nestled below 12,000' peaks. The Eagles Nest Wilderness is designated wilderness which means that travel is allowed by foot or horseback only. You will never hear an ATV or chainsaw nor see much human traffic. Can there be better elk habitat on the Earth? The Eagles Nest Wilderness is situated in the White River National Forest and is home to a large portion of the White River herd. The White River herd is the largest herd of free ranging elk on the planet. At over 25,000 head, there are numerous branch antlered bulls with many at trophy potential.
Our hunts are based from camps strategically placed in the wilderness. Your guide will take you out of camp and you will be hunting the drainages and ridges all day long. You will cover lots of ground and work hard but the reward is well worth the effort. As licensed professional outfitters, we are committed to providing you with an exciting and pleasurable experience in the back country with a high percentage of success and opportunities at your trophy of a lifetime. Summit County Outfitters is licensed and registered with the state of Colorado. Our hunting unit is located in Colorado GMU 371 and 37, which is an over the counter unit with exceptions for muzzle loader and first rifle seasons. The muzzle loading season will require you to draw for a tag in April and generally requires anywhere from none to two preference points. The first rifle season requires that you draw for a tag in April and generally you will draw the tag with no preference points required. Preference points are acquired each time the hunter is unsuccessful in the draw (one point per year). All deer tags are by draw only. Deer tags in GMU 371 are generally drawn if applied for. Applications are available in late February. The application deadline is usually the first Tuesday in April.
